FROM STAFF REPORTS
BURNET — A Kempner man who allegedly fled from the scene of an accident that injured three people — including two youth — faces felony charges for failing to stop and render aid.
On June 21, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Joseph Van Gundy responded to a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 11:20 a.m. at the intersection of CR 118 and Navajo Drive in the Sherwood Shores area of Burnet County. Upon arrival at 11:59 a.m., Van Gundy found one of the drivers had fled the scene, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
However, the trooper was able to determine the driver’s identity as Corey Amidon, 20, of Kempner. According to the affidavit compiled by Van Gundy and submitted to Burnet County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Lisa Whitehead, the suspect had not provided any information with the driver of the second vehicle before fleeing, nor did he call law enforcement to report the accident. He also didn’t help the victims of the crash including a 9-year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl and a 34-year-old man, who were injured.
Van Gundy stated in the affidavit that all three of the injured had to be taken to Seton Highland Lakes by ambulance, though none appeared to be suffering life-threatening injuries.
Under state law, a person involved in an accident in which someone is injured must stop and stay at the scene and provide assistance.
Amidon was arrested June 22 by troopers on possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to maintain financial responsibility charges and booked into the Burnet County Jail.
On June 25, Van Gundy obtained an arrest warrant for failing to stop and render aid (resulting in serious bodily injury) for Amidon. The additional charge was added as the suspect was still being held in jail.
The latest charge is a third-degree felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He is being held in lieu of a $75,000 bond on the failing to stop and render aid charge.
