LLANO — State District Judge Dan Mills sentenced a 72-year-old man to life in prison June 17 after a Llano County jury deliberated for 16 minutes before finding him guilty of his eighth intoxication-related crime.
The jury convicted Richard Lee Pollard of Llano of driving while intoxicated (third or more.) He was pulled over by Llano County deputies May 27, 2013, outside of Llano and charged for driving while intoxicated.
Pollard has a string of intoxicated-related convictions going back as far 1981.
“This is his eighth intoxicated-related conviction,” said Llano County Assistant District Attorney Blake Ewing. “His first one was actually an intoxicated manslaughter in 1981. We think this verdict and sentence is absolutely critical to keeping people safe.”
After being arrested May 27, 2013, and bonding out, Pollard didn’t wait long before ending up behind bars again. On June 19, 2013, law enforcement arrested him again for driving while intoxicated.
Ewing said that case is still pending.
Pollard’s conviction and sentence hopefully will make other people think before they get behind the wheel after drinking.
“We want people to know we take driving while intoxicated seriously and will prosecute these cases,” Ewing said. “We hope this definitely sends a message how seriously we take it. This is a crime that destroys peoples’ lives.”
